Enter the 17-character VIN of a Hyundai Sonata and the free decoder, which needs no registration, reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data lists 14 versions, for example the Sonata III (Y3), the Sonata V (NF, facelift 2008) and the Sonata VII (LF facelift 2017). Model years run from 1985 to the present, the only body style in our data is Sedan, and power ranges from 86 to 290 hp.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft or owners, so the decoder cannot show any of that. On a car you are looking at, compare the VIN on the car with the one in the documents, and for the history behind it you would need a paid vehicle history report.

The decoder gives you the model year from the 10th character, and you can set that against the version names in our data, such as Sonata IV (EF) or Sonata IV (EF, facelift 2001). The VIN alone does not name the version in our decoder, so check the code in the registration papers as well.
All 17 characters must match exactly, and none of them should be I, O or Q. Look closely at the 10th character for the model year, the 11th for the plant and the last six for the serial number. On a car sold in North America the 9th character is a check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently.
It will not tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also reads only the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture, so it does not confirm the exact power output of a particular car.
