About the Honda Civic

Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads three things for a Honda Civic: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers model years 1972 to 2024, four body styles (Sedan, Hatchback, Wagon and Coupe) and power from 45 to 205 hp, spread over 46 versions such as Honda Civic III Shuttle or Honda Civic IX Coupe. A Civic built before 1981 will not carry a 17-character VIN, so the decoder only applies to the later cars.

A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, so a decoded result says nothing about how the car has been used. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while on the car itself you should compare the decoded year and country with the registration papers, and check the body style and power against what the seller claims.

Learn more about VINs

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Before you buy a used Honda Civic

  • Compare the VIN on the dashboard, the door frame and the documents. All three should match.
  • Look for signs of tampering around the VIN plate and the door frame sticker.
  • Ask for the service history and check it against the car.
  • Run a full history report to see recorded damage, mileage and theft records.

Frequently asked questions

In which years was the Honda Civic built?

Our data lists model years 1972 - 2024 across 46 versions of the Honda Civic. The VIN of a particular car shows its model year in the 10th character.

How many versions of the Honda Civic are in your data?

46 versions, in 4 body styles, with power up to 205 hp. Use the VIN to confirm which one you have.

How can I tell which Civic version a car is from its VIN?

The decoder gives you the model year, and that narrows the field among the 46 versions in our data. To pin down the exact version, match the body style (Sedan, Hatchback, Wagon or Coupe) and the power output on the registration document to the version names, for example Honda Civic II Hatchback or Honda Civic IV Shuttle.

What should I compare between the VIN plate and the documents?

All 17 characters must match exactly, on the plate or stamping on the car and on the registration papers. Also check that the 10th character agrees with the model year shown in the papers, and remember that the letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so any of them points to a misread or a faulty entry.

What will the free decoder not tell me about a Honda Civic?

It will not show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It only reads the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture, and it needs no registration.
