Enter the 17-character VIN of a Holden and the free decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the code, with no registration. Our data for the brand covers 21 models, from Acadia, Apollo and Astra through Commodore, Monaro and Rodeo to Trailblazer, Ute, Vectra and Zafira. The model years in our version data run from 1985 to 2020, across Sedan, Wagon, Convertible, Hatchback and SUV bodies, with power figures up to 413 hp.
The decoder does not show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because a VIN does not contain them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters of a VIN are the WMI, the code that identifies the manufacturer and the country where the vehicle was made. For Holden we currently have no WMI codes mapped, so there are no codes or countries to list here. That is a gap in our list and says nothing about your vehicle. A VIN that starts with any other characters is not a problem, and the decoder will still read what it can from the rest of the number.
Position 10 is the model year, and this is the character most useful for a Holden in our data. Our version data runs from 1985 to 2020, so you will meet letters from F (1985) up to L (2020), with digits for the years 2001 to 2009. A 10th character of 8 means 2008, and Y means 2000. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so a character like that is a misread, not a model year. The year letters repeat after 30 years, which is why the decoder reads the whole code and not the letter alone.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, position 9 is the check digit, position 11 is the plant and positions 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so a check digit that looks odd is not an error in itself. VINs in this format exist for cars built since 1981.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration documents and the insurance papers first, where it is printed in full. On the vehicle itself it is usually on a plate or label that can be read from outside, such as at the base of the windscreen or on the door pillar.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We have no WMI codes mapped to Holden at the moment, so the decoder cannot match them to the brand from that part alone.
Read the 10th character. For the years in our data, 1985 to 2020, that is a letter from F to L, or a digit from 1 to 9 for 2001 to 2009. For example, 8 stands for 2008 and L for 2020.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the paperwork, and check that the model year from the 10th character fits the advertised year. Then look at the service records and have the car inspected before you pay.
