Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads what is built into it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. For Hawtai, our data lists seven models, among them the A25, B11, Boliger, C9, E70, E80 and Terracan, in SUV and Sedan body styles. The version data we hold covers model years 2013 to 2018, and the highest power figure in it is 180 hp.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes on file for Hawtai at the moment, so there is no country to show for the brand from the first three characters. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a cause for concern.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs must use it as a check digit, while many European VINs fill it differently. Character 10 gives the model year. For the 2013 to 2018 range in our Hawtai data, that means D for 2013, E for 2014, F for 2015, G for 2016, H for 2017 and J for 2018. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.

Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look in the registration documents first, then on the car itself. On many cars the VIN is visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side or on a sticker in the door frame.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes on file for Hawtai, so the decoder cannot match the brand by these characters alone. That does not make any particular VIN wrong.
Check the 10th character. In the 2013 to 2018 range of our data, D means 2013, G means 2016 and J means 2018, with E, F and H covering 2014, 2015 and 2017.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It only reads the characters of the number itself.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents and that it has 17 characters without I, O or Q. Then look at the car in person and ask the seller for service records.
