Enter a 17-character VIN and the Hafei decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. Our data for the brand covers five models, Brio, Princip, Saibao, Sigma and Simbo, with version data for model years 2004 to 2008, in Sedan and Hatchback body styles. The highest power we have on record is 126 hp.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which is a separate step from this free decoder.
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Hafei we have no WMI codes on record yet, so there is no list of codes to show here. Our list is not complete, and that says nothing about any particular VIN. The decoder still works through the rest of the structure of the number.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is the check digit, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so a 0 or 1 in a Hafei VIN is always a digit.
The 10th character gives the model year. For the 2004 to 2008 range in our Hafei data, the characters are 4 for 2004, 5 for 2005, 6 for 2006, 7 for 2007 and 8 for 2008. A VIN with a 6 in that position, for example, points to model year 2006. Character 11 marks the plant where the car was built.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually printed at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a plate or sticker at the door frame, and in the registration papers. Compare at least two of these places and make sure the numbers match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the region. We have no WMI codes on record for Hafei at the moment, and our list is incomplete, so a VIN is not wrong just because we cannot match its first characters.
Look at the 10th character. In our version data for the brand, 4 means 2004, 5 means 2005, 6 means 2006, 7 means 2007 and 8 means 2008.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It only reads the 17 characters and tells you what they encode.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the papers and that the 10th character fits the year the seller states. Then ask for documents that cover the car's past, since the number alone will not tell you that.
