Enter a 17-character VIN and the HistoVIN decoder reads what the code itself contains: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. For Gleagle, our data lists two models, EV K12 and EV K17, with model years from 2016 to 2018 and the Hatchback body style.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but a VIN holds no accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Gleagle, so we cannot list any here. That is a gap in our list, not a statement about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it, while many European VINs fill it differently. Character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
The model year character is the easiest part to check. For the years in our Gleagle data, G stands for 2016, H for 2017 and J for 2018. A VIN with H in the tenth position, for example, points to model year 2017.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is usually visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a sticker in a door frame, and in the registration papers. Compare all the places you can find it, because they should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Gleagle at present, so we have no list of them to show you.
Look at the tenth character. In our data, which covers 2016 to 2018, G means 2016, H means 2017 and J means 2018.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It only reads the characters of the code itself.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and that it has 17 characters without the letters I, O or Q. Then check that the tenth character fits the model year in the advert, for example H for 2017.
