The Ginetta decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers four models, Akula, G40, G55 and G58, with version data for model years 2010 to 2016. The highest power figure we hold is 175 hp.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three are the WMI, the code that identifies the manufacturer. For Ginetta we currently have no WMI code mapped, so there is no code to quote here and no country to name. Our list is not complete, and it only shows the codes we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor, and character 9 is the check digit. That digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently. Character 10 is the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 the serial number.
Our version data for Ginetta runs from 2010 to 2016. In that range the tenth character is A for 2010, B for 2011, C for 2012, D for 2013, E for 2014, F for 2015 and G for 2016.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Start with the registration papers, where the 17 characters are printed. The VIN is also marked on the car itself, but the exact place differs from car to car, so compare the two.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI code mapped to Ginetta at the moment, and our list is incomplete, so we can only describe the codes we recognise.
Look at the tenth character. Within the 2010 to 2016 range of our data, A means 2010 and G means 2016, with B to F covering the years in between.
It reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. None of that is stored in the 17 characters.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the paperwork, character for character. Then look into mileage, accident and ownership records separately, since the VIN does not carry them.
