Enter a 17-character VIN and the Geo decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. It is free and needs no registration. Our version data for the brand covers five models (Metro, Prizm, Spectrum, Storm and Tracker), model years 1988 to 1998, and the body styles Hatchback, Sedan and SUV, with a highest listed output of 130 hp.
The decoder does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in a VIN. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which you can look at once you know the car's basic identity.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, character 11 is the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently.
At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Geo, so we cannot list the codes or the countries they belong to. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with any other characters is not a problem in itself. The decoder still reads the model year and the other positions from whatever VIN you enter.
The model year is the easiest part to check by hand. For the Geo range in our data, the tenth character runs from J for 1988 up to W for 1998. For example, R means 1994, S means 1995 and T means 1996. Because the same letters repeat after 30 years, the letter alone should be read together with the rest of the car's details.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is usually printed on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side and on a label in the driver's door frame. It is also listed on the registration and title documents. Compare at least two of these places before you decode it.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We do not currently have any WMI codes mapped to Geo, so the decoder may not name the brand from those characters alone. That reflects the limits of our list, not a fault in your VIN.
Look at the tenth character. For the years in our Geo data it is J for 1988, K for 1989, L for 1990, M for 1991, N for 1992, P for 1993, R for 1994, S for 1995, T for 1996, V for 1997 and W for 1998.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft status or the number of previous owners. A VIN only identifies the vehicle and does not record its history.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one on the paperwork, and that it contains no I, O or Q. Decode it and see whether the model year fits the car in front of you, since the models in our data (Metro, Prizm, Spectrum, Storm and Tracker) were built between 1988 and 1998. Then look at the condition and service records in person.
