Type the 17-character VIN of a Genesis into the decoder and it reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the code. Our data for the brand covers six models, among them the G70, G80, G90/EQ900, GV60, GV70 and GV80, in Sedan, Wagon and SUV body styles. The highest power figure in our data is 425 hp.
The decoder is free and needs no registration. It reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. For Genesis we recognise two of them, KMH and KMT, and both belong to South Korea. Our list of codes is not exhaustive, so a VIN that starts with something else is not a problem in itself. It simply may not be one we map to the brand yet.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must carry a real check digit, while many European ones fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year. R stands for 2024, S for 2025 and T for 2026, so a Genesis VIN with an S in tenth place points to model year 2025.
Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN, which helps when you are copying one from a document. If the decoder rejects your entry, look for a misread 1 or 0 first.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually visible through the windscreen at the base on the driver's side, and often on a label in the door frame. It also appears in the registration papers. Compare all of them, since they should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We map KMH and KMT to Genesis, and both codes belong to South Korea.
Look at the tenth character. A letter or digit there stands for a year, for example R for 2024, S for 2025 and T for 2026. The decoder reads this for you.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. The decoder gives you the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture only.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents and that the decoded model year and country fit the listing. Then ask the seller for service records and inspect the car in person.
