This free Geely VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers 34 Geely models, from Atlas and Coolray to Monjaro, Starray and Xingyue L, with version data from 2003 to the present. Enter the VIN and the result appears at once, with no registration.
A VIN holds no accident records, mileage readings, theft flags or owner details. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which is a separate step from this decoder.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Geely we recognise two of them: L6T and LPS. Both belong to China in our data, so a VIN that begins with either code points to a car built there. Our list of codes is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not wrong because of that. These are simply the ones we map to the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, where the manufacturer encodes details of the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. The 10th character gives the model year, and the 11th usually marks the plant. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
The model year character is the easiest part to check by hand. A letter M in position 10 stands for 2021, P for 2023 and R for 2024, while a digit such as 3 stands for 2003. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so if you see one while copying a number, you have misread it.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side and printed on the registration documents. Many cars also carry it on a plate or label in the door frame. Compare the number on the car with the one in the paperwork.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We map L6T and LPS to Geely, and both are assigned to China. Other prefixes may exist that are not in our list.
Look at the 10th character. For example, M means 2021, P means 2023 and R means 2024. Our version data for the brand starts in 2003 and runs to the present, since some models are still built.
It reads only the VIN itself, so it shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one on the documents, and that the decoded year and country fit what the seller tells you. Then look at the service records and have the car inspected before you pay.
