Enter a 17-character VIN and the EVO decoder reads what is written in the number itself: the manufacturer code, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers five models (3, 4, 5, 7 and Cross4), all SUVs, with model years from 2020 to the present.
The decoder does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in a VIN. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and, through it, the country of manufacture. For EVO we have no WMI codes mapped yet, so we cannot list a prefix here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year. For the years in our EVO data the letters are L for 2020, M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024 and S for 2025. Character 11 is the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration papers first, since the VIN is printed there. On the car it is normally on a plate or sticker, so compare the number on the car with the one on the paperwork and make sure they match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and the country. We do not yet have a WMI mapped to EVO, so the decoder may not name the brand from those characters alone. That reflects our incomplete list and says nothing about the VIN.
Check the 10th character. An L means 2020, M means 2021, N means 2022, P means 2023, R means 2024 and S means 2025. Our EVO data runs from 2020 to the present.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft status or past owners, because a VIN does not contain them. It only reads the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture from the 17 characters.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the registration papers, and check that the model year from the 10th character fits the model and the seller's description. Then ask for the service records and have the car inspected in person, since the VIN alone says nothing about condition.
