Enter a 17-character VIN and the Engler decoder reads the manufacturer code, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. Our data for the brand is small: one model, F.F SUPERQUAD, with version data for the 2018 model year only.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it shows nothing about a vehicle's past. Accidents, mileage, theft and previous owners are not stored in the number, and that information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Engler, so we cannot list any here. That reflects our data, not the vehicle. A VIN that starts with other characters can still be decoded normally.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill it differently. Character 10 gives the model year. Our Engler data covers 2018, which appears in a VIN as the letter J. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Check the vehicle registration papers first, since the VIN is normally printed there. On the vehicle it is usually stamped or plated in a visible place, so compare the two and make sure they match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Engler yet, so we cannot name specific ones. The decoder still reads the rest of the VIN as usual.
Look at the 10th character. For the 2018 model year in our data it is the letter J. The letter alone gives the year, so use it alongside the registration papers.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is encoded in the VIN. It also does not list body style or power for this brand, as we have no data on those.
Confirm that the VIN on the vehicle matches the one in the documents, and that the decoded model year fits the seller's description. Then ask for service records and inspect the vehicle in person.
