Enter the 17-character VIN of a DS and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. It is free and needs no registration. Our version data for the brand covers six models (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9), model years from 2014 to the present, and four body styles: Hatchback, Convertible, SUV and Sedan. The most powerful version in that data makes 225 hp.
The VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identify the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to DS, so we cannot list any here. That is a limit of our list and says nothing about a particular car.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year. Since our DS data starts in 2014, the letters you are most likely to meet there are E for 2014, F for 2015, J for 2018, L for 2020 and R for 2024.
Character 11 marks the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of that particular car. Read the whole VIN from the vehicle itself or from its registration papers, and enter it exactly as printed.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
Look at the registration document first, then check the car itself. The VIN is usually visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side and is often also stamped on the body. Compare the number on the car with the one in the papers.
The first three characters are the WMI, which tell you the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We do not currently have WMI codes mapped to DS, so the decoder cannot confirm them from our list. Our list is not complete, so a VIN that starts differently is not a cause for concern.
Look at the 10th character. A letter or digit stands for the year, for example E for 2014, J for 2018, L for 2020 and R for 2024. Our DS version data starts in 2014.
It reads only the VIN, so it shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft records and the number of owners are not stored in the VIN.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the registration papers, and that the model year fits the car being offered. Ask to see service records and inspect the body style and equipment against the advert. For a Convertible, also look at the roof and its seals.
