The DongFeng VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data lists seven DongFeng models, among them Box, Fengon E3, Fengshen A9, MPV, Oting, Rich and ZND, with version data for model years 2007 to 2024 and the body styles Hatchback, SUV and Sedan. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. For DongFeng we map five of them: LDC, LGB, LGJ, LJD and LVH. All five belong to China in our data. These are the codes we recognise for the brand, and the list is not complete, so a VIN that starts with other characters is simply one our mapping does not cover yet.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, which the manufacturer uses to describe the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. The tenth character is the model year. A DongFeng built in 2007 carries a 7 there, 2010 is A, 2020 is L and 2024 is R, which covers the span of our version data. Letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0.
Character 11 identifies the assembly plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual vehicle. This 17-character layout applies to cars built since 1981.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration documents first, where the VIN is printed in full. On the car itself it is usually visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side or on a label at the door frame.
The first three characters are the WMI. We recognise LDC, LGB, LGJ, LJD and LVH for DongFeng, and all of them point to China as the country of manufacture. Our list of codes is not complete, so other starting characters are not a cause for concern.
Read the tenth character. For example 7 means 2007, A means 2010, L means 2020 and R means 2024. Our DongFeng version data runs from 2007 to 2024.
It decodes only the VIN, so it shows manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in the VIN at all.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the documents and make sure they match exactly. Then inspect the car in person, take a test drive and ask the seller for service records.
