Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads what is built into it: the manufacturer code, the model year and the country of manufacture. For DFSK, our data covers five models: 500, 580, 600, F5 and Seres 3. The version data runs from model year 2019 to the present, and the body style listed is SUV.
A VIN does not hold accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the region. For DFSK we currently have no WMI codes mapped, so we cannot name a country of manufacture for the brand. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it, while many European VINs fill it differently. The 10th character gives the model year. For a DFSK within our data, an L in that position means 2020 and an M means 2021. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
It is usually printed on a plate at the base of the windscreen or on the door pillar, and it also appears in the registration papers. Compare the number in the papers with the one on the vehicle before you enter it.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to DFSK at the moment, so the decoder may not be able to name the manufacturer or country from the prefix alone.
Look at the 10th character. In the range covered by our data, K stands for 2019, L for 2020, M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024 and S for 2025.
It reads only the VIN, so it shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture where known. Accidents, mileage, theft and previous owners are not stored in the VIN.
Make sure the VIN on the vehicle matches the registration papers and that the 10th character fits the model year in the advert. Then ask for service records and have the car inspected in person.
