Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads what is encoded in it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for Derways covers seven models, among them Antelope, Aurora, Cowboy, Land Crown, Plutus, Saladin and Shuttle, with model years from 2004 to 2008.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Derways, and no country information for the brand, so we cannot point to a specific three-character prefix here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, which the maker uses to describe the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year. For the Derways years in our data, 2004 is shown as 4, 2005 as 5, 2006 as 6, 2007 as 7 and 2008 as 8.
Character 11 marks the assembly plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. Our version data for Derways lists the SUV body style and a highest power of 170 hp. Use these figures as a rough guide only, because the VIN alone does not tell you which version a given car is.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at your registration papers first, then on the car itself. The VIN is commonly stamped or printed at the base of the windscreen or on the door frame. Check that the number on the car matches the one in the documents.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Derways at the moment, so we cannot name a prefix for the brand. That does not make any particular VIN wrong.
Look at the 10th character. For the years in our Derways data, 4 means 2004, 5 means 2005, 6 means 2006, 7 means 2007 and 8 means 2008.
It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It reads only the 17 characters.
Compare the VIN on the car with the VIN in the registration papers, and make sure the model year matches what the seller says. Inspect the car in person or have it inspected, and ask the seller for service records and ownership documents.
