Enter a 17-character VIN and the Datsun decoder reads what is written in the number itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers four models (GO, mi-DO, on-DO and redi-GO), model years 2013 to 2018, and the body styles Hatchback and Sedan. The highest power figure we hold is 106 hp.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but a VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit (required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently), character 10 is the model year, character 11 is the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
For Datsun we currently have no WMI codes mapped to the brand, so there is no list of codes to show here and no country we can name. If the decoder cannot name the manufacturer from the first three characters, that only reflects the limits of our list. It says nothing about the VIN or the car.
The model year is easier to check. Our Datsun data runs from 2013 to 2018, which in position 10 means the letters D (2013), E (2014), F (2015), G (2016), H (2017) and J (2018). A VIN with G as its tenth character, for example, points to model year 2016.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look for the 17-character number on the vehicle registration or title document, and compare it with the one stamped on the car itself. A common place to check on the car is the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, and many cars also carry a plate or sticker in the door frame.
The first three characters are the WMI, which stands for manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Datsun at the moment, so the decoder may not name the manufacturer for these VINs. That does not make a VIN wrong.
Use the tenth character. For the 2013 to 2018 range in our data, D means 2013, E 2014, F 2015, G 2016, H 2017 and J 2018.
It reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or how many owners a car has had. None of that is stored in the number.
Make sure the VIN on the documents matches the one on the car, and that the decoded model year fits the model and the seller's description. Then ask for service records and inspect the car in person.
