The Dallas VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture, as far as the code allows. Our data lists one Dallas model, the Fun, with model years from 1994 to 1998 and a highest power figure of 75 hp. Enter the VIN and the result appears straight away, with no registration and no fee.
The decoder reads the VIN and nothing more, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier, which points to the maker and the country of manufacture. For Dallas we currently have no WMI codes on record, so we cannot name a code or a country here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a reason for doubt.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year, which is the most useful position for a Dallas Fun. For the years in our data the letters are R for 1994, S for 1995, T for 1996, V for 1997 and W for 1998.
Character 11 marks the plant where the car was built, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. Together with the model year letter, this is what the decoder turns into plain text for you.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is usually printed in the registration papers and on the car itself, often on a plate near the base of the windscreen or on a door frame. Make sure you copy all 17 characters exactly.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes on record for Dallas, so we cannot list any. The codes we know are limited, and a different start to the VIN does not mean anything is wrong.
Look at the 10th character of the VIN. In our data the Fun covers 1994 to 1998, which correspond to the letters R, S, T, V and W in that order.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not give equipment details beyond what the code itself contains.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers and make sure they match. Check that the model year decoded from character 10 fits the age given in the advert, and ask to see service records and ownership documents.
