What is a Daihatsu VIN decoder?

This page decodes the VIN of a Daihatsu using only the 17 characters of the number itself. Enter it and you get the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers 33 models, from the Altis and Applause to the Xenia and YRV, with model years from 1977 to 2021.

A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.

What the Daihatsu decoder shows

  • The manufacturer and brand (Daihatsu)
  • The model year
  • The country of manufacture
  • The assembly plant, when it is coded
  • The vehicle type and body style, where the manufacturer encodes it
  • Engine and model details, where available
  • Whether the VIN structure and check digit are valid

How to read the VIN of a Daihatsu

The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. The code we map to Daihatsu is JDA, and it belongs to Japan. So a VIN that begins with JDA decodes to Daihatsu, built in Japan. Our list of codes is not complete, and the one listed here is simply the one we recognise for the brand.

Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, where the maker encodes details of the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so a odd-looking ninth character is not a reason for concern on its own. Letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, which avoids confusion with 1 and 0.

Character 10 gives the model year. A K in that position means 2019 and an M means 2021, which is the end of the range in our version data. The letters repeat over time, so a B stands for 1981 as well as 2011, and the rest of the VIN helps you tell which one you have. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981, so for the earliest years in our 1977 to 2021 range the number on the car may look different.

How a VIN is built

Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.

Learn more about VINs

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Before you buy a used Daihatsu

  • Compare the VIN on the dashboard, the door frame and the documents. All three should match.
  • Look for signs of tampering around the VIN plate and the door frame sticker.
  • Ask for the service history and check it against the car.
  • Run a full history report to see recorded damage, mileage and theft records.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Daihatsu?

Look at the vehicle registration document first, then compare it with the number on the car itself. It is usually on a plate or stamping at the base of the windscreen or on a door pillar. Always check that both match.

What does JDA at the start of the VIN mean?

JDA is the WMI code we map to Daihatsu, and it belongs to Japan. Our list is not complete, so a VIN that starts with other characters is not necessarily a problem. It just may not be among the codes we currently recognise.

How do I find the model year of a Daihatsu from its VIN?

Read the 10th character. For example, K means 2019, L means 2020 and M means 2021. Letters are reused after 30 years, so B can mean 1981 or 2011.

What can the decoder not tell me?

It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or how many owners a car has had.

What should I check before buying a used Daihatsu?

Make sure the VIN on the car, in the paperwork and in the decoder result all agree. It should have 17 characters with no I, O or Q, and the model year character should fit the year the seller states. Then inspect the car in person and ask for its service records.
