Enter the 17-character VIN of a Dacia and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the number. Our data for the brand covers 16 models, from the older 1300, 1310 and 1410 to Duster, Jogger, Sandero and Spring, with body styles ranging across Sedan, Wagon, Hatchback, Van and SUV.
The VIN itself holds nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. The code we map to Dacia is UU1, and it belongs to Romania. So a VIN that begins with UU1 decodes as a Dacia made in Romania. Our list of codes is not complete, and UU1 is simply the one we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so it is not a reliable test for a Dacia. Character 10 gives the model year. For example, a Dacia with M in tenth position is a 2021 model year, and L stands for 2020. Character 11 is the plant code, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, which avoids confusion with 1 and 0. Standard 17-character VINs apply to cars built since 1981. Our version data for Dacia starts in 1969, so on the oldest cars the number may not follow this format.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually printed on the vehicle registration document and stamped on the car itself, often visible at the base of the windscreen or on the door pillar. Compare the number on the car with the one in the papers character by character.
The first three characters are the manufacturer code. UU1 is the code we map to Dacia, and it points to Romania as the country of manufacture. Other codes may exist for the brand that are not in our list.
Look at the tenth character. A letter or digit stands for the year, for example L for 2020, M for 2021 and N for 2022. The decoder shows this year for you once you enter the full VIN.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of the car or its equipment.
Make sure the VIN has 17 characters, contains no I, O or Q, and matches the registration document and the number on the car. Then check that the decoded model year and country fit the advert, and ask the seller about any difference.
