Enter the 17-character VIN of a Cupra and the decoder reads what is built into the number itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data holds 10 Cupra models, among them Ateca, Born, E-Racer, Formentor, Leon, Raval, Tavascan, TCR, Terramar and UrbanRebel. The version data covers model years from 2018 to the present, since some of these models are still built. Body styles in that data are SUV, Hatchback and Wagon, and the highest power figure is 390 hp.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but it reads only the VIN. Accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners are not stored in the number. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. Characters 1 to 3 are the WMI, the code for the manufacturer. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 is the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 the serial number. This layout has been the standard for cars built since 1981.
At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Cupra, so there is no list of first-three-character codes or countries of manufacture to show here. The decoder still reads the first three characters of any VIN you enter, and our list of codes is simply not complete. A VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself.
The model year is the easiest part to check by hand. Our Cupra data starts at 2018, which is the letter J in position 10. K stands for 2019, L for 2020, M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024, S for 2025 and T for 2026. As for the check digit in position 9, it is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
Look in the vehicle registration papers first, then on the car itself. The exact spot on the body varies, so check both and make sure the two numbers match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Cupra at the moment, and our list is not complete, so the decoder reads whatever you enter without judging it.
Look at the 10th character. For the years in our Cupra data, J means 2018, K 2019, L 2020, M 2021, N 2022, P 2023, R 2024, S 2025 and T 2026.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers, and confirm it has 17 characters with no I, O or Q. Ask for service records, look the car over in person and take a test drive before you agree on a price.
