Enter a 17-character VIN and the Chery decoder tells you who made the car, which model year it belongs to and in which country it was built. It is free and needs no registration. Our Chery data covers 23 models, from the Amulet, Fora and Kimo (A1) to the Omoda 5, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9, with model years from 2003 to 2024.
The VIN itself holds nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which you can look at once you know the basics of the car you are checking.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Chery we recognise three of them: 98R, 9UJ and LVV. They belong to Brazil, Uruguay and China, so a VIN beginning 98R points to Brazil, 9UJ to Uruguay and LVV to China. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with something else is not a reason for concern. These are simply the codes we map to the brand.
The tenth character is the model year. For a Chery within our data, that character runs from 3 for 2003 up to R for 2024. A 10th character of L means 2020 and P means 2023. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so if you think you see one, it is probably a 1 or a 0.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 11 marks the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Our Chery data includes hatchback, sedan, SUV and coupe bodies and power up to 254 hp, but the decoder reads only the manufacturer, model year and country from the VIN.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
Look at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on the sticker on a door pillar, and in the registration documents. Check that the number is the same in all of these places.
They are the first three characters of the VIN, the WMI codes we map to Chery. 98R belongs to Brazil, 9UJ to Uruguay and LVV to China. Other codes may exist that are not in our list.
Read the 10th character. For example, 3 stands for 2003, L for 2020, P for 2023 and R for 2024. The decoder does this for you.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not show how a particular car is equipped or what condition it is in.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the documents, and make sure the model year character fits the year the seller gives you. Then inspect the car in person and ask for service records.
