The Callaway VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers one model, the C12, with version data from 1998 to 2001 in Convertible and Coupe body styles. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in a VIN. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Pick a Callaway model to see how its VIN works.
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Callaway, so there is no code or country to quote as an example here. Our WMI list is not complete, and that says nothing about any particular VIN.
The tenth character gives the model year. For the 1998 to 2001 range in our data, the letters are W for 1998, X for 1999, Y for 2000 and the digit 1 for 2001. A C12 with a Y in tenth position, for instance, points to model year 2000.
The rest of the VIN follows the general pattern. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 11 marks the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so if you are copying a VIN by hand, a character that looks like one of them is a 1 or a 0.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the vehicle registration papers first, then on the car itself. On many cars the VIN is visible at the base of the windscreen or on a plate in the door frame, but the exact spot can vary.
Characters 1 to 3 are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Callaway yet, so the decoder cannot match a VIN to the brand by those characters alone.
Check the tenth character. Within our data it is W for 1998, X for 1999, Y for 2000 and 1 for 2001.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners. A VIN only identifies the vehicle and does not record its life.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and that the decoded model year and body style (Convertible or Coupe) agree with what you are being told. Then ask for service records and have the car inspected in person.
