Enter a 17-character Bristol VIN and the decoder reads what the number itself holds: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand lists four models, for example Blenheim, Bullet, Fighter and Speedster, with version data from 1997 to 2017. The body styles are Roadster and Convertible, and the highest power figure we have is 390 hp.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder here stays free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We do not yet have any WMI codes mapped to Bristol, so there is no list of codes to show here and no country to name. That is a gap in our list, not a statement about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position in a different way. Character 10 gives the model year. For the years our Bristol data covers, V stands for 1997, 5 for 2005, A for 2010 and H for 2017. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration document first, then compare it with the number stamped or plated on the car itself. Both should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes on record for Bristol at the moment, so we cannot list any here.
Use the 10th character. In the range our data covers, V means 1997, 5 means 2005, A means 2010 and H means 2017, so the letters run from V to H with digits in between.
It reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. None of that is stored in the number.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the paperwork character for character, and that it has 17 characters with no I, O or Q. Then check that the decoded model year and body style, Roadster or Convertible in our data, fit the car in front of you.
