Enter a 17-character VIN and the Bentley decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the code. Our Bentley data covers 11 models, from Arnage, Azure and Bacalar to Mulsanne and Turbo R, with model years from 1982 to 2024 and the body styles Sedan, Convertible and SUV. The highest power figure in our data is 710 hp.
The decoder reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you how a particular car has been treated. Accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners are not stored in the VIN, and that information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Bentley we recognise SCB and SJA, and both belong to the United Kingdom. So a VIN that begins with SCB or SJA decodes to Bentley as the manufacturer and the United Kingdom as the country of manufacture. Our WMI list is not complete, so these are simply the codes we map to the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, where the manufacturer encodes details about the car. Character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs must use it as one, while many European VINs fill that position in their own way, so a Bentley VIN should not be judged by it alone.
Character 10 gives the model year. An R stands for 2024, the latest year in our Bentley data, and a C stands for 1982, the earliest. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN, which avoids confusion with 1 and 0.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is printed in the car's registration papers and is also marked on the car itself. If you are looking at a car for sale, compare the number in the documents with the one on the car, then type it into the decoder.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We map SCB and SJA to Bentley, and both codes belong to the United Kingdom.
Look at the 10th character. For example, C means 1982, K means 1989, Y means 2000 and R means 2024. Our version data for the brand runs from 1982 to 2024.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is contained in the 17 characters. The decoder gives you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture.
Decode the VIN first and make sure the manufacturer and model year match what the seller and the documents say. Then check that the number on the car matches the paperwork, and inspect the car in person.
