What is a Aston Martin VIN decoder?

Enter the 17-character VIN of an Aston Martin and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the characters. It is free and needs no registration. Our data for the brand covers 25 models, from the AMV8 and DB5 to the DB12, Valhalla and Zagato, with model years from 1958 to the present.

A VIN holds no accident entries, mileage readings, theft records or owner details, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

What the Aston Martin decoder shows

  • The manufacturer and brand (Aston Martin)
  • The model year
  • The country of manufacture
  • The assembly plant, when it is coded
  • The vehicle type and body style, where the manufacturer encodes it
  • Engine and model details, where available
  • Whether the VIN structure and check digit are valid

How the VIN of an Aston Martin is read

Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Aston Martin, so we do not list any here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a cause for concern.

Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year, and character 11 the plant. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.

As an example, a P in position 10 means model year 2023, an R means 2024 and an S means 2025. Our version data starts in 1958, but the 17-character VIN format applies to cars built since 1981. Older cars may carry a different kind of identification number.

Learn more about VINs

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Before you buy a used Aston Martin

  • Compare the VIN on the dashboard, the door frame and the documents. All three should match.
  • Look for signs of tampering around the VIN plate and the door frame sticker.
  • Ask for the service history and check it against the car.
  • Run a full history report to see recorded damage, mileage and theft records.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the VIN on an Aston Martin?

Look at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on the label in the door opening, and in the registration documents. Compare these, because they should all show the same 17 characters.

What do the first characters of an Aston Martin VIN mean?

The first three characters are the WMI, which stands for the manufacturer and the country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Aston Martin yet, so we cannot list any, and our list is not complete.

How do I find the model year of my Aston Martin from the VIN?

Check the 10th character. For example, P stands for 2023, R for 2024 and S for 2025. The decoder shows this year for you when you enter the VIN.

What can the Aston Martin VIN decoder not show?

It does not show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.

What should I check before buying a used Aston Martin?

Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the papers, and decode it to see whether the model year and country fit the advertisement. Then ask for service records and have the car inspected in person, since the body style, from Coupe and Convertible to SUV, tells you little about its condition.
