The Artega VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a vehicle identification number and tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture where the code allows it. Our data for the brand lists two models, the GT and the Scalo, with version data for model years 2010 to 2015.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN follows the same layout. Characters 1 to 3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot appear anywhere in a valid VIN.
For Artega we currently have no WMI codes mapped to the brand, so we cannot name a country from the first three characters. The list we hold is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a reason for concern. The model year character still reads the same way: A stands for 2010, C for 2012 and F for 2015, which spans the range our version data covers for the GT and the Scalo.
Position 9 depends on the market. It is a required check digit in North America, while many European VINs fill it in differently, so a check digit that does not calculate is not proof of a problem on its own.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

A VIN is usually shown on a plate visible through the windscreen, on a label in a door frame and in the vehicle registration papers. Check the number on the car against the papers, character by character.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Artega at the moment, so the decoder cannot match the start of the VIN to the brand. That says nothing about whether a particular VIN is correct.
Look at the 10th character. For the years in our Artega data, A means 2010, B 2011, C 2012, D 2013, E 2014 and F 2015.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners. None of that is stored in the VIN itself.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents and has 17 characters without I, O or Q. Then ask the seller for service records and the vehicle's past, and have the car inspected in person.
