Our data covers 71 Renault models, with names such as Dauphine, Estafette, Clio, Captur, Austral and 5 E-Tech, and model years from 1956 to the present. With a range that wide, two used Renaults at a similar asking price can have very different pasts. A history check lets you look at that past before you spend time and money on one car.

Where the Renault VIN decoder explains what is encoded in the number itself, a history report looks at records linked to that one car, such as damage, mileage readings, theft entries and ownership changes, where available. What it cannot tell you is how the car drives today, so it works alongside an inspection by a mechanic, not instead of one.

What a report can show about a used Renault

  • Damage and accident records tied to the VIN of the Renault
  • Mileage readings recorded over the years
  • Theft and search entries, where such data exists
  • Changes of owner and registration history
  • Technical data and equipment of the vehicle
  • Archive photos, where available

Records are shown where available. Coverage may vary by country and vehicle.

What to check before you buy a used Renault

Most of what goes wrong in a used-car purchase is hard to see on the day. Mileage and past damage are the classic examples: a test drive tells you little about either, and photos show a clean surface, not what was repaired underneath. The seller may also describe the car in good faith in a way that does not match the records, and the paperwork you are handed can differ from them too. A check before you visit or pay a deposit costs little next to buying the wrong car.

The Renault range makes this more relevant. The body styles in our data run from hatchback, sedan and estate to SUV, van, coupe, cabriolet, convertible and roadster, and the model years start in 1956. A Kangoo or Express that worked for years, a Duster or Kadjar bought privately, and a Fuego or Espace that has changed hands several times will each leave a very different trail. The age and price gap on the used market is large, so the mileage and ownership questions you ask should fit the car in front of you.

Borders matter as well. The manufacturer codes (WMI) we know for this brand come from France, but a car of one brand is often built in one country, sold in another and registered in a third. Its history can therefore be spread across several countries, and coverage may vary by country and vehicle. A report shows records where they are available. It does not describe the current technical condition, which is why the mechanic's inspection still matters.

How it works

Compare them with the seller's account and decide with the facts in front of you.

The VIN of a Renault on its own

The VIN decoder reads the manufacturer code, model year and country of manufacture of a Renault. It does not show the history of the car.

Questions and answers

What can a history report for a Renault show?

Depending on what is available for the car, it can show records such as damage, mileage readings, theft entries, ownership changes and technical data. Coverage may vary by country and vehicle, so some reports will be fuller than others.

Is the VIN alone enough to know the car?

No. The VIN identifies the car and encodes some basic details, but it does not tell you what has happened to that car since it was built. Records linked to the VIN are what a history check adds, and even those say nothing about how the car feels on the road today.

Should I check the history before visiting the seller?

It is a sensible order. If the records do not match the advert, you find out before travelling or paying a deposit. If they do match, you can spend the visit on the things only a person can judge, such as the condition of the car and how it drives.

What if records are missing for the car I am looking at?

Missing records mean nothing was found for that point, not that the car has a clean past. Ask the seller to explain the gaps, ask for service documents, and consider a thorough inspection before you decide.

How should I treat a Renault that was imported or built abroad?

Expect that its history may sit in more than one country, and that coverage can differ from one country to another. Compare the registration documents and the seller's account with the records, and ask about the car's earlier owners and where it was previously registered.
